Laser hair removal: Is it worth it?

If you were to ask me the best beauty treatments I've ever had done and what I'd recommend, laser hair removal would be my number one answer.

Laser hair removal is something that I've wanted since I was, no joke, about 11 years old. I've always been super hairy, down to my brown people genes, and it's been something I've been super self conscious about after having people comment on my hairy arms and tash.

So many of you have popped me DM's on Instagram when I have posted stories about going to my laser sessions, asking me questions about my experience, so I thought I'd pop all the FAQ's in one place

Does laser hair removal hurt?

In short, yes...but it is a bearable pain. For me, I found that my test-patch session and my first two real sessions were pretty pain free, and were just a bit uncomfortable. The remaining sessions however, let's just say they were a bit more painful, maybe a 6/10. The pain got worse as they turned the intensity of the laser up, but since I had my underarms done the treatment was over before I knew it anyway. My sessions were less than five minutes, with probably only about two minutes being under the laser.

How much does laser hair removal cost?

I had my laser hair removal done at Pulse Light Clinic and paid £269 for eight sessions. When i've spoken to other people about how much they've paid for their laser hair removal they've been a bit shocked that I paid so much, but in all honesty, I'd go back again and pay that price because they have 18 years experience behind them as a clinic and I know their treatments work.

Most professional clinics that offer laser hair removal will do packages where you can get numerous body parts done for a set price, which I wish I'd done as you do save a big chunk of money over paying for each part individually. For example, Pulse Light Clinic do an offer for any Bikini & a choice of one of the following: Underarm, Perianal or Naval, for £600 for eight sessions.

If you're changing your razor heads as frequently as you should, or getting regular waxing, then laser hair removal in the long run will definitely work out cheaper, and will be far more convenient.

How many sessions will I need?

This is something I cannot give you a straightforward answer on as everyone reacts differently to the laser treatment. I bought a package of 8 and have so far had 7, and plan to save my final one for when my regrowth gets a bit faster. After about 4 I saw that my regrowth was so much slower and the hairs were coming through finer, but I continued to have the 3 more which slowed the re-growth even more. I would say the average number of sessions is between 6-8 but they will be able to give you a more accurate number when you go for your consultation.

How long do I leave between each session?

Now this is a question that depends on how far you are into your sessions. E.G. I left a much bigger gap between my fifth and sixth appointment than the recommended time, purely because I was not seeing much re-growth. In general however, they recommend having a session every 6 weeks, and you can't wax or epilate in these periods - shaving only.

What are the results like from laser hair removal?

I now shave my armpits probably about once a week - to some of you lighter hair folks this probably seems like a normal amount, but I was shaving my armpits every single day before I had laser. As someone who goes to the gym 5-6 days a week, and often lifts weights in those sessions, having hair-free pits was important to me. The hairs are incredibly fine now when they grow back and sometimes I even don't notice them for a couple of days because they're so thin!

Some people have asked me if laser hair removal is 100% permanent, and the answer is not necessarily. Results vary from person to person, and the results are definitely long term, but many people do book in the occasional top up as regrowth can speed up again over time.

Overall, I'd recommend laser hair removal to anyone, and I'd most definitely recommend choosing Pulse Light Clinic if you are based in London. My dark shadowed underarms are no more, and I save an extra few minutes in the mornings where I don't have to shave my pits everyday!
