Meeting strangers on the internet

Making new friends once you get a little older can be super hard, and I for one have found it challenging to meet new friends since I left University. When we are younger we are thrown into so many situations where we are forced to meet new people; school, clubs, University etc. Now that I have started my full time job, it is such a challenge to get out there and meet new people. Yes, you can meet friends when you start work, but sometimes you need people outside of work that you can spend time with.

A couple of weeks ago a lovely girl called Dom messaged me on Instagram and asked to meet up for a coffee, as she had been following me online for a while and was actually on a term abroad in London. At first, I was a little sceptical, as we are always force-fed this fear of stranger danger, and that we shouldn't meet up with random people from the internet. Who knows why this is still a thing, with the rise of internet dating and friendship apps - I can probably name at least 5 friends who are in relationships people they met on Tinder. Nonetheless, I agreed to meet up with Dom and I am so pleased that I did. Yes, it was a little daunting knowing that I was going to meet someone who I knew nothing about, aside from what I could see on her Instagram, but it was so worth it. I now feel like I have made a new friend, whom without the internet I definitely would never have met.

I am now so much more open to meeting friends online, and actually meeting up. For sure, I need to join some clubs and get some other hobbies so I can meet people in a more natural way, but the internet is definitely a good place to start in terms of meeting people with similar interests to you - especially if you are a blogger.

I am by no means saying that we should all encourage each other to meet up with strangers on the internet, please don't take this the wrong way, but if you, like me, are feeling a little trapped and just like you need to meet new people, it can be a great way. Just don't go agreeing to meet up with people in non-public areas, if you know nothing about them, then a disaster is waiting to happen. I'd love to know if you guys have a load of internet friends, let me know!

  1. I've met so many friends from the internet, as well as my boyfriend who I met on Tinder and now we've been together 3 years. I grew up being told not to talk to strangers online but now I think it's fine as long as you do your research and nothing seems dodgy! I've met so many bloggers at events and for a coffee that I only knew through twitter! Best friendships have come from it xx
